VEAL S.A company is a partnership of HELECTOR S.A with the Australian Energy Developments Ltd, supported by the Association of Communities and Municipalities in the Attica Region (ESDKNA). It has fuel cogeneration installation of biogas (landfill gas) from the landfill of Ano Liosia which began operating in March 2001, with an installed power of 13,8 MW, while expanding in October 2006 by 9,7 MW upload the total installed power to 23,5 MW, making the project one of the largest of its kind worldwide. The pumping of biogas takes place from a total area of approximately 1.000.000m2. The total cost of the investment, together with the initial installation, amounted to 35.5 million euros, which is also financed by Ministry of Development programs by 45%.

The electricity produced by the facility is sold to DESMHE SA (Electricity Transmission System Operator), and also produces thermal energy from waste heat of power generators pairs in the form of hot water.

The resulting hot water is used in the adjacent treatment plant through evaporation of liquid waste arising from the operation of landfills, which belongs to ESDKNA. The expected net production of electricity from the facility, which replaces generation from conventional fuels, is 172.000MWh year.

The net production of electricity from the facility equals to the energy consumed by 24.500 households per year.

Additionally, the operation of the cogeneration plant saves additional electricity from the reduction of losses from the transmission system, freeing it from the need to transfer the corresponding output from remote locations (Northern Greece) and saves resources from needed upgrades.

The substitution of fossil fuels leads to the avoidance of additional quantity of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere of around 146.200 tn annually.

In this way the two projects – the energy station and the leachate treatment- plant form a single system that addresses the two basic sources of pollution from the operation of the landfill in the region, operating in a way that not only it does not consume energy but instead returns energy to the society. At the same time, the project ensures the avoidance of uncontrolled escape of gaseous pollutants, particularly methane resulting from the process of anaerobic digestion of waste in landfills.
